Effortless Elegance: Quick and Easy Tips for Setting a Beautiful Table

If you're anything like me and find hosting a bit stressful (I'm working on it!), then having a beautifully set table beforehand, can really impress your guests and set a positive mood.

Knowing where to start is key, and following some simple rules can help you set an elegant table for any occasion.

1. Consider the event

Are you hosting indoors or outdoors? A formal meal for a special occasion calls for a set table, while a casual outdoor gathering might be better suited for sharing platters with friends. Instead of decorating the centre of each table (keep this for the platters), focus on creating beautifully layered place settings.

2. Set the foundations

The type of fabric you choose for your tablecloth can make a big difference. Crushed linen works well for relaxed events, while crisp cotton is perfect for more formal occasions. For outdoor dining, a bare table with a table runner can be a great choice.

3. Use napkins

For a more upmarket look that will last longer, opt for fabric napkins in cotton or linen with napkin rings. You can even make your own! Choosing a napkin colour that contrasts with your tablecloth can add a pop of colour to your setting.

4. Mix up your tableware

Don't feel like you must stick to matching tableware. Mixing patterns and colours with plates and bowls can add visual interest to your table. For example, if you have four of the same kind plate, then space those evenly and layer in mismatched pieces.

5. Arrange cutlery properly

Place cutlery from the outside towards the middle for multiple courses. Forks go on the left, while knives and spoons go on the right. These ‘Real Simple’ guides are a great rule of thumb.

6. Create a table centrepiece

A table centrepiece can make a big statement but try to keep it low so guests can still see each other across the table. If you want to go for Insta wow, and have a tall vase with big flowers, consider removing it while eating.

7. Add personal touches

Adding something personal or unique to impress your guests can create lasting memories and make a difference to their experience. It can be something as simple as an addition on top of their napkin or a small takeaway item near their plate like a homemade name card or sweet.
