Transform Your Cabinets with a DIY Paint Project!

Are you looking to save money on your cabinet renovation? Why not take matters into your own hands with a fun and rewarding DIY paint project? When it comes to renovating your cabinets, choosing the right paint colour is just the first step. The finish and paint you choose can make all the difference in achieving the durability and desired look.

CHOOSING THE PAINT

Ask a specialist painter or paint distributor for their best recommendation based on the type of cabinets you have.

Choose the right primer to suit your choice of paint. This is the most important step apart from sanding and cleaning.

A water-soluble option is a much better choice, as this really helps the paint adhere to the surface.

Choose a satin, semi-gloss, or gloss finish as these are easier to clean and more durable.

If you have the skill and equipment, spraying gives a better, smoother finish. Otherwise, use a fine bristle brush as rollers can leave marks on your cabinetry.

Choosing between an oil or water-based paint is 50/50. Water-based dries quickly and is easy to clean. Oil takes longer to dry but has a smoother, firmer finish.

CHOICE OF PAINT BRAND

Dulux Renovation – This has its pros and cons. Must be applied correctly by following instructions to the letter! I have seen the results of this product when applied well and it turns out fantastic. However, I can’t vouch for its durability. Best suited for cabinets if you want a glossy or satin look.

White Knight – This product was used extensively by Cherie Barber on her renovation show. However, she now no longer uses it. Could be a sponsorship reason but I haven’t personally seen this used. Many of the reviews I have read while researching, weren’t favourable for benchtops and tiles, but cabinets seemed to be 50/50. Best suited for cabinets if you want a glossy or satin look.

Frenchic – This is the new product that Cherie Barber is now using. According to the stockists, it is a self-priming and self-sealing paint that is easy to use and will give your kitchen cabinets a facelift on a wallet-friendly budget. This paint finish is a chalky, matt finish.

Tint – What about an eco-friendly paint for your reno job? This company is changing the way renovations are done by reducing their impact on your wall, cupboards, trims, and anything else in between with their 99.9% VOC-free, odour, and animal-free paints. What’s more, is that you can join their Tint Pro group for free and access their paint specialist support team. Why not create your own colour in the kitchen?

Good luck on your cabinet reno journey. Stay tuned as the Jones household prepares to do the same over Christmas. We are starting in the laundry and then moving onto the bathroom cupboards, then onto the kitchen, which will be two-toned.
