Too Busy to Declutter? Here’s How to Get Started Without Overwhelm
Was one of your new year’s resolutions to finally get to that job of decluttering? If you haven’t started yet, because you don’t know where to begin (or just don’t have the time), you’re not alone!
Between work, family, and life’s never-ending to-do list, the idea of sorting through years of stuff can feel completely overwhelming.
But here’s the thing—decluttering doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing task. With a different approach, you can chip away at it without stress and actually enjoy the results of a calm, clutter-free space.
Start Small (Seriously, Smaller Than You Think!)
Forget the idea that you need to declutter your entire home in one go—who has time for that?!
Instead, start ridiculously small:
✔ One drawer
✔ One shelf
✔ One corner of a room
The goal? Make progress, not perfection. When you start small, you’ll actually finish what you start, and that sense of accomplishment will keep you going!
Ask Yourself: How Do I Want to Use This Space?
Instead of seeing what you need to get rid of, shift your focus to what you want your home to feel like. A room that’s designed around your lifestyle (instead of clutter) will feel lighter, fresher, and more intentional.
💡 Example: Struggling with an overflowing wardrobe? Instead of asking, "Should I keep this?", try asking:
✔ Does this fit the life I live today?
✔ Would I buy this again right now?
✔ Does this make me feel confident when I wear it?
If the answer is no, it’s time to let it go—and trust me, your future self will thank you.
Declutter Before You Organise (Game-Changer!)
Trying to declutter and organise at the same time is like trying to mop the floor while the sink is overflowing—it just makes more of a mess!
Step 1: Declutter.
Step 2: Organise.
And avoid buying storage bins for your drawers and cupboards, until you know what you actually need. Otherwise, they’ll just become clutter containers (we’ve all been there!).
Quality Over Quantity (Less Stuff = Less Stress)
One of the biggest decluttering mistakes? Thinking more is better. It’s not.
Start shifting to fewer, better-quality items that actually serve a purpose. Instead of three half-used lotions that smell nice, buy one great one you love and use it completely before getting another. This mindset shift will simplify your space AND your life.
Picture the End Result & How Good It Will Feel
Imagine this:
✨ A home that feels calm, fresh, and welcoming
✨ Knowing exactly where everything is (no more searching for lost keys!)
✨ Walking into a space that feels like YOU!
That’s what’s waiting on the other side of decluttering. And the best part? You don’t have to do it all today. Take your time, work at your own pace, and celebrate every small win along the way.
