Have You Committed a Rug Crime?

It is safe to say that there’s not going to be an arrest made if you don’t have the right sized rug in your space. There is also a lot of different information out there about how to work out which size, for what room. The best tip I can give you is to use good old painter’s tape! Map out the rug size on the floor with the tape and a measuring tape. Place your furniture on that area and see which dimensions would work best in the space with your furniture.

But if it’s still tricky for you to work out size then here’s some custom information per room:

LIVING ROOM

If you have a big area then buy a large enough rug so that all of your furniture e.g., sofas, chairs, side tables, coffee table etc can fit on the rug. Leave enough space between and you should have about 15 to 20 cm border around all the furniture.

In a smaller area, you want a rug that is big enough so that the front legs of all the furniture can sit on the rug. This is the same for round rugs too.

Large Room size – 300cm x 400cm; 240cm x 330cm

Small to Medium Room size – 160cm x 230cm; 155cm x 255cm; 120cm x 170cm

BEDROOM

For a large bedroom, aim for a rug that is big enough for the bed and bedside tables to sit on with a frame of about 60-80cm of rug.

In a smaller bedroom, aim for the lower two-thirds of the bed on top of the rug so that your feet touch the rug when you get out of bed. You can also place a runner either side of the bed or a round rug off-centre to add interest.

Large room – 240cm x 330cm (king); 290cm x 200cm (queen)

Smaller room – 250cm x 300cm

DINING ROOM

Aim for the dining table and chairs to sit on the rug when fully pulled out. Choose a rug shape that fits your dining table.

6 – 8 chair rectangular dining table – 240cm x 330cm

Round dining table – 200cm x 200cm; 240cm x 240cm

Good luck with your new purchase. Or maybe you can tick off the rug size box and rest easy knowing that the sheriff won’t come calling at your place.......
